I got a new machine: How do I keep my existing reports, logs and configuration?

Moving SharePoint Essentials Toolkit to a new computer? Deactivate the license on the old machine, copy your reports, logs and configuration folders, clear the license cache, and activate on the new machine.

Moving SharePoint Essentials Toolkit to a new computer? Your reports, exports, logs and configuration are stored in folders on your old machine. Deactivate the license on the old machine, copy those folders to the new one, clear the license cache, and then activate — you will pick up right where you left off.

1. Deactivate your license on the old machine

  1. In SharePoint Essentials Toolkit on the old machine, click License in the left navigation.

  2. Click Deactivate. This frees your activation so it can be used on the new machine.

Note: If the old machine is no longer available (it crashed or was wiped before you could deactivate), create a support ticket and we will deactivate the license for you.

2. Install the tool on the new machine

Download and install the latest version of SharePoint Essentials Toolkit on the new machine. You can find the download link by logging into your account on cognillo.com. Do not activate yet — copy your files first so they are not overwritten.

3. Copy your files to the new machine

Copy these three folders from the old machine to the same locations on the new machine (replace <username> with your Windows account name):

  • C:\Users\<username>\Documents\SharePoint Essentials Toolkit\ — reports, exports and logs

  • C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Cognillo\SharePoint Essentials Toolkit\ — your saved settings and configuration

  • C:\ProgramData\Cognillo\SharePoint Essentials Toolkit\ — shared application data

Tip: The AppData and ProgramData folders are hidden by default. Paste the path into the File Explorer address bar and press Enter, or turn on View > Show > Hidden items.

If your Windows user name is different on the new machine, place the folders under that user's own paths — the contents carry over, only the location changes.

4. Clear the license cache on the new machine

Before activating, remove any license information that was copied over from the old machine:

  1. Open the folder C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Cognillo\SharePoint Essentials Toolkit\License\Cache\ (the AppData folder is hidden — paste the path into the File Explorer address bar).

  2. Delete the files inside the Cache folder.

5. Activate your license on the new machine

  1. In SharePoint Essentials Toolkit, click License in the left navigation.

  2. Enter your License Activation Key and Registered email, then click Activate. A confirmation popup should appear.

  3. Verify that the license information shown on the License page is correct.

If the new machine cannot reach the licensing service, see How do I activate the license OFFLINE?
