Understanding Token Usage in Genta
Last updated: 2026-09-21
Learn what tokens are in Genta, how many your test cases will use, how many tests fit in each plan, and tips to optimize token consumption.
What is a token?
A token is the unit of AI processing Genta uses to measure work. Every time Genta reads your instructions, looks at a page, decides what to do, or writes a result, it consumes tokens. Roughly, 1 token ≈ ¾ of an English word — but for Genta, what matters is that tokens cover both the thinking and the acting the AI does on your behalf.
Your plan includes a monthly token allowance. You can run unlimited test cases and steps as long as you stay within that allowance. On paid plans, going over the allowance simply continues running and is billed at a fixed overage rate. On the Free plan, execution pauses until the next month or until you upgrade.
How many tokens does a test case use?
Token usage depends on several factors:
Number of steps — each instruction (click, type, verify, navigate) adds tokens.
Page complexity — busy pages with many elements need more tokens for the AI to "see" them.
Options selected — screenshots, assertions, retries, and detailed logs add tokens.
Test data and variables — longer input strings and dynamic data slightly increase usage.
As a rough baseline:
Simple test case (5–10 steps, single page): ~50K tokens
Typical test case (10–20 steps, multi-page flow): ~100K tokens
Complex test case (20+ steps, conditional logic, many screenshots): ~250K+ tokens
How many tests fit in each plan?
Using the basic test case baseline (~50K tokens each):
Plan | Monthly Tokens | ≈ Basic Test Cases / Month | Effective Cost per 1M Tokens |
|---|---|---|---|
Free | 0.5M | ≈ 10 | — |
Starter ($29) | 3M | ≈ 60 | $9.67 |
Pro ($79) | 12M | ≈ 240 | $6.58 |
Team ($199) | 40M | ≈ 800 | $4.98 |
These are estimates. Your actual usage will vary based on the complexity of your test cases.
Tips to reduce token usage
Keep test cases focused. One test case should verify one behavior. Split long, multi-purpose tests into smaller suites.
Reuse test suites. Move common setup steps (login, navigation) into shared suites instead of repeating them in every test.
Disable screenshots on passing steps. Capture screenshots only on failures to keep artifact tokens low.
Use specific instructions. "Click the Submit button at the bottom of the form" is more efficient than vague instructions that make the AI re-scan the page.
Avoid unnecessary waits and retries. Each retry repeats the work — and the tokens. Tune your timeout policies.
Run smoke tests on Free, full regression on Pro/Team. Use the right plan for the right job.
What happens if I run out of tokens?
Free plan: Execution pauses until the start of the next billing month, or until you upgrade. Your test cases and history are preserved.
Starter / Pro / Team: Workflows continue without interruption. Additional tokens are auto-billed at the overage rate listed for your plan ($10 / $8 / $6 per 1M tokens respectively).
Monitoring your usage
You can view your current token consumption and forecast for the month inside the Genta dashboard at qa.genta.ai. Set usage alerts to be notified before you cross thresholds.
Enterprise plans
For organizations with larger automation needs, Genta offers an Enterprise plan with a custom monthly token allowance tailored to your workload. Enterprise customers benefit from cost savings on overage tokens through volume-negotiated rates, plus dedicated support, SSO, and data residency controls. Contact our sales team to discuss your requirements.
