How to Copy Lists from one site to another
Last updated: 2026-10-07
This article shows how you can copy lists using the SharePoint Essentials Toolkit.
Introduction
The SharePoint Essentials Toolkit can be used to easily copy SharePoint Lists and Libraries. SharePoint content types, site columns and fields can be auto created by the tool. Last modified information and authors will be preserved.
Note that Version History can be retained if using the Enterprise version, minor version history is not supported at this time, only copying major versions.
Before you begin, be sure you have SharePoint Site Owner or SharePoint Site Collection Administrator rights on the source and target sites.
Full Control will often work at the site level, however some resources are sometimes needed depending on the SharePoint List/Library being copied, will require Site Collection Administrator rights.
SharePoint Online: Having the SharePoint Admin Role or Global Admin rights does not give you access to SharePoint content. You must have access to SharePoint Content before you can copy the content.
The SharePoint Essentials Toolkit can copy from:
a single SharePoint list to another site
a single SharePoint list to multiple sites
multiple lists (from multiple sites) to a single target site
